This is a really interesting thread....
This reminded me of how the "worldly" charity Habitat for Humanity helps low income individuals own their own homes.
1) Individual puts in XX number hours ("sweat equity") helping to build the home alongside qualified construction workers. (Similar to how congregation members volunteer for quick builds.)
2) The individual pays for the actual cost of materials only through repayment of a NO INTEREST loan!
This allows the individual to have a new, well built, home that they can afford and that THEY will eventually own!
Now if Habitat for Humanity can do this for low income individuals why can't the WTS do this for their own congregations? Yeah, right!!!

Scriptures You Will Not Hear at the 30-04-06 Church Sermon
by scout575 in"but the same day that lot went out of sodom it rained fire and sulphur from heaven, and destroyed them all.
even thus shall it be on the day when the son of man is revealed.
" ( luke 17: 29, 30 ).

Scout,
Reading your posts every week, "Scriptures you will not hear..." has awakened in me a desire to actually begin attending various church services in order to submit my own posts, 'Scriptures Heard at the [fill in the date] Church Service!"
Imagine that, 30 years after leaving the Jehovah's Witness religion, you have motivated me to begin attending church!!
I would suggest you do the same. Then we can write reviews based on our own unique perspectives and experiences!
Somehow I think the churches I go to will lean more heavily on the saving grace of God ("God is love...") than on the more judgemental aspects that the JW's seem to relish. But to each his own!
See you in church?
God Bless You!

Watchtower "Worship"
by Sunspot inlet's discuss "watchtower worship"....or the understanding of the idea of "worship".
this is defined as "a reverence for god" in my dictionary.
the cold and clinical buildings that they "worship" in,

Slick Willie
Right on, Sunspot! I often myself wondered where exactly was the worship at the hall.
When I was studying to be a JW back in 1975 I studied with a Pioneer who's father was the PO. My girlfriend studied with a sister who was also a Pioneer. Being new, I read the Bible a lot especially the New Testament. After a meeting one night I was telling this Pioneer sister how I was reading the Gospels and how profound I found much of what Jesus said. My heart was overflowing with joy, thankfulness, and reverence to God after having spent so much time reading Christ's own words. How did this "spiritual" Pioneer sister react? She got a very stony look on her face and said (in a very hard tone) 'That's funny because I don't ever feel religious!' Then she stalked away from me! I really felt like I had made a major faux pas there (and of course now I realize I did!) This was one of my moments of cognizant dissonance that started to make me feel uncomfortable even before I was baptized.
Years later I realized that the annual memorial of Christ's death where 99.99% of the attendees reject the bread and wine was actually an ignorant rejection of Christ's sacrifice. Truly the WTS's two classes teaching is designed to seperate people from Christ and if I was a literalist or fundamentalist Christian I would even say these are "doctrines of demons."
Two days after my baptism at the district assembly (1975, Bayfront Center, St. Petersburg, FL) I listened to the "public talk" where the speaker (probably some a-hole from Bethel) proceeded to castigate the Catholic clergy even going so far as to call them "swine." I then watched as hordes of people streamed out of the arena, apparently as much turned off by this man's rant as I was! I sat there and thought to myself "Oh Oh, I think maybe I've made a mistake here." But I successfully suppressed these and many other experiences that told me there was something truly unchristian about this organization.
After several years of Catholic bashing at the KH I came to the conclusion that the WTS has a major case of "Catholicism envy"!

Emily Dickenson
by cosmic inmy favorite poet is emily dickenson, a beautiful sould trapped for and because of love.
it doesn't take a great deal of reading of her stuff to feel the "moderninity" of her thought.
i would like to hear from whomever ladies decide to contribute what their particular feelings are as to love and being loved might be and what god ( be he(r) jehovah, jesus, bob, sam, or augie) might have put into their hearts as to what "love" really is and why it is different from the interpretation(s) of us beer swilling swine.

This is my favorite poem of Emily Dickinson's. It was used in the movie Sophie's Choice back around 1982. When I started going to college I had the opportunity to read a lot of her stuff. She's quite amazing, isn't she?
Here it is:
Ample make this bed.
Make this bed with awe;
In it wait till judgment break
Excellent and fair.Be its mattress straight,
Be its pillow round;
Let no sunrise' yellow noise
Interrupt this ground. -

Did the elders contact you 1 year after being DF'd?
by JH in.
elders are supposed to meet everyone once a year, either df'd ones or inactive, just to try to bring them back.. in my case, they usually try right before the memorial.
how about you?.

WAS THIS A NO-NO FOR YOUR CONG. SHEPHERDING VISITS?
by juni ini don't know where the elders learned this one.
maybe it was local - i don't know.
but.... these were shepherding calls to build you up spiritually so therefore no serving of coffee or cookies were allowed.. was this true with your congregation's shepherding visits?.
-
Slick Willie
Where is simple good will in this org? I mean just basic human kindness. They have to make up rules about serving food and/or drinks on sheparding calls? Maybe more people would stay in the org if they received elders visits with the sole purpose of Christian fellowship and encouragement and just having an amiable conversation. Wonder if they ever thought of that?
So glad I'm out of this lame ass religion!

Well, I really want to believe it. Not sure if everything in the Bible attributed to God is really from God though. A lot of the Old Testament stuff makes God seem like a childish, ego-driven maniac who doesn't even seem to understand or care about his own creation.
But what do you think Jeannie?
